Have you ever been scammed while shopping online?
We hear different stories from people talking about their shopping woes. From the popular “What I ordered VS What I got” to paying ghost vendors. To avoid being part of these sob stories, here are 5 ways to shop safely online:
1. Verify that the online store is legit by checking out their social media handles.

(Really, this is an absolute must. Check and re-check as much as possible. Look at the previous orders and the comments to avoid stories that touch the heart).
2. Ensure their website is secure by checking that the website address begins with “https://”
(Https is simply Http with encryption. Insecure sites, especially eCommerce sites, are prone to cyber-attack, and more importantly, customers’ details like name and credit card details could be hacked).
3. Use strong passwords to secure your online shopping account. (Be creative with your passwords. Move away from passwords like name1234) Better still, utilize Google authentication to register or log in to your account.
4. Make payments with trusted gateways like Paystack, Klasha, Flutterwave, or a verified bank account provided by the online store.
5. Do not use public Wi-Fi while shopping online. Public networks are not secured, and any information entered can be accessed.
(This is one of the rare times where free isn’t always good. To avoid seeing random debit alerts and risk suffering from a heart attack, run away from public Wi-Fi’s)
